UK. IMCA publishes info note on Divers' Gas Supply

The International Marine Contractors Association (IMCA) has published an information note (IMCA D 04/11) on Divers Gas Supply. In the early days of saturation diving, a number of situations arose when divers working in the water lost their main gas supply, explains IMCAs Technical Director, Jane Bugler. Upon investigation it was found that the cause, in some of these cases, was that the gas supply system was set up in such a way that a failure of one divers umbilical or supply pipe work also removed the gas supply to another diver. A requirement was therefore introduced that each divers gas supply needs to be arranged so that if one line fails then this does not interfere with another divers gas supply. This requirement has been in existence since 1976. It was repeated in 1983 in the UK Department of Energys Diving Safety Memo 10/1983 and AODC issued formal guidance in November 1984 as information note AODC 028 Divers gas supply. This requirement is also included in the document IMCA D 024 Diving Equipment Systems Inspection Guidance Note (DESIGN) in section 5, item 7.13 and in IMCA D 014 Rev. 1 International code of practice for offshore diving in paragraph 4.6.3. Our recently published information note, which updates and replaces AODC 028, has been developed to clarify the requirement, and circulated to all members of our diving division, she adds. The information note sets out the general principles explaining that it is necessary to ensure that the loss of gas supply to one diver will not compromise another diver by depriving him of his supply. This could happen if two divers are fed from a common supply and one divers umbilical is cut or ruptured resulting in the second diver potentially losing his supply through the gas taking the path of least resistance into the water. The Diving Safety Memo 10/1983 stated this requirement as: The air supply system to a diver should be designed in such a way that in the event of the divers umbilical being cut or severed, it should not deprive any other diver or standby diver of their air supply. It should be noted that it is impractical for the affected gas supply to be isolated by manually shutting a valve. Although the memo refers to air supply, the problem is the same for air or mixed gas diving, and is equally applicable to surface orientated or bell diving, explains Jane Bugler. It needs to be stressed that the standby diver (or bellman) should also be considered. If there are two working divers in the water, plus a standby diver (or bellman), then the breathing mixture supply needs to be such that the rupture of one divers umbilical and the consequent escape of gas does not deprive either the other diver, or the standby diver, of his supply. There are numerous ways of meeting this requirement, including totally separate supply systems (from separate sources) and complex valving arrangements with automatic shut down of the line in which pressure is lost. Most of these arrangements meet the requirement, and provided the basic intent of the requirement is understood then it is possible to check whether any specific system is suitable. Our information note sets out three ways of checking the system. Further information on the information note is available from IMCA at imca@imca-int.com or from IMCA, 52 Grosvenor Gardens, London SW1W 0AU, UK. Tel: +44 (0) 20 7824 5520; Fax: +44 (0) 20 7824 5521. Forest Wood Cup: World's top anglers converge for bass fishing's only $1 million cash prize

Seventy-seven of the worlds top pros have qualified for FLW Outdoors $2 million Forrest Wood Cup presented by BP and Castrol the World Championship of Bass Fishing and are set to converge on the Three Rivers in Pittsburgh, Pa., July 30-Aug. 2 for their shot at the $1 million cash prize. The Forrest Wood Cup presented by BP and Castrol is the richest bass fishing tournament in the world, and Team Kelloggs pro Dave Lefebre of Union City, Pa., is counting down the days until he can start competition on what he calls his home water. I was in a lot of tournaments there when I was growing up, said Lefebre, who has won more than $1 million in FLW Outdoors events. I like the tougher tournaments the ones where its not always a slam-fest. I like the fisheries where its harder to get a limit. There are a lot of obscure things I like to fish, Lefebre added. Im just excited to go look at the old holes and feel out whats going on Just having an understanding of how those fish work is what excites me. Lefebre said the quality of fishing on the Three Rivers fluctuates, but he expects the overall catch to be better than the 2005 Bassmaster Classic in Pittsburgh. Its definitely going to be better than that, Lefebre said. Its up and down from one year to the next. It depends on the flooding and the snow and that stuff. That was just an off year. It will definitely be leaps and bounds better than what we saw there. I think it will take 8 1/2 to 10 pounds a day just to make the cut, and 14 to 15 pounds a day to win, Lefebre added. Lefebre said all three Pittsburgh-area rivers the Allegheny, Monongahela and Ohio all contain quality fish and that winning fish could come from any of the three rivers. Lefebre also said that anglers will rely on a variety of baits to catch their limits. Ninety percent of the fish weighed in will be smallmouth, maybe nine percent will be spotted bass and the rest will be largemouth, Lefebre said. That being said, topwater, crankbaits, spinnerbaits and a real small shaky-head worm will be productive. The Forrest Wood Cup presented by BP and Castrol includes 154 pro and co-anglers who have qualified the top 40 pros and co-anglers from the Walmart FLW Tour, the top 30 pros and co-anglers from the 2008 Walmart FLW Series BP Eastern and National Guard Western Divisions, the top five pros and co-anglers from the 2008 Stren Series divisions (Central, Northeast, Southeast, Texas and Western), the 2009 BFL All-American champion, who competes with more than 34,000 anglers to win their spot, and the 2009 The Bass Federation National Championship presented by the National Guard champion, who competes with more than 20,000 anglers to win their spot. The Forrest Wood Cup is the most important event, most competitive event and most difficult-to-qualify-for event in our sport, said FLW Outdoors President and CEO Charlie Evans. Forrest Wood Cup competitors are world-class athletes with skills that are second to none. These are the best men and women in the sport, and the best of the best will win as much as $1 million in Pittsburgh on Aug. 2. Some of the anglers qualified for the Forrest Wood Cup presented by BP and Castrol are the 2008 Champion and $1 million winner Team Febreeze pro Michael Bennett of Lincoln, Calif., Pringles Rookie of the Year and Team Berkley pro Stetson Blaylock of Benton, Ark., 1997 Bassmaster Classic and 2000 Forrest Wood Cup winner and Team Chevy pro Dion Hibdon of Stover, Mo., 2003 Bassmaster Classic winner Michael Iaconelli of Runnemede, N.J., legendary Team Chevy pro Larry The General Nixon of Bee Branch, Ark., 2004 Bassmaster Classic winner Takahiro Omori of Emory, Texas, 2007 Forrest Wood Cup winner, bass fishings first instant millionaire and Team Folgers pro Scott Suggs of Bryant, Ark., and 2009 Land OLakes Angler of the Year and Team Kelloggs pro Clark Wendlandt of Leander, Texas.
